There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2
Self-doubt and self-hatred run pretty rampant in our society. Not sure you agree? Try making a quick list of the things you “feel bad about”.
Many of us feel bad about mistakes we have made, particularly mistakes that might have hurt other people. I once told a banking client I would not approve his loan request before he even submitted the request to me. I clearly hurt his pride and, ultimately, for no business reason whatsoever. The workplace regrets are bad. The family regrets are much worse.
But we can also feel bad about things that might not have been our fault. Many of us feel bad about our upbringing. Maybe you come from a family that held racist views, or took advantage of the poor in your community, or mocked people who were different from you.
We can feel bad about failures we experienced. The classes we failed in school, the jobs we got fired from, and the races we lost.
We can have a very bad habit of replaying those things in our heads, sometimes to the point where they come to define us. When we think of who we are, we think: a person who hurts others; a person who comes from a long line of abusers or hatemongers; a failure, a cheat, a liar, a thief, a loser.
But our scripture for today says that when we are in Christ there is NO condemnation. That lack of condemnation is as broad as the condemnation we carried before Christ saved us. There is no condemnation for our sin. There is no condemnation for the sins of others. Whatever sin and death brought into your life, the Spirit of Christ set you free from it. There is no now condemnation at all.
Don’t settle for a piece of freedom my friends. Walk in all the freedom Christ has offered you.
